Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has warned that the Bundesliga title race is not over yet, despite his team’s recent struggles. Leverkusen are currently fourth in the table, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
“The Bundesliga is not over yet,” Alonso said. “We respect Augsburg, who we play next. We need to focus on ourselves and win our remaining games.”
Alonso also spoke about Leverkusen’s upcoming Europa League final against Atalanta.
“Atalanta is one of the best teams in Europe,” Alonso said. “The coach has a clear plan, they have a great mentality and a big squad.
“If we do our best, we have a chance, but it will be tight. They are a top-top team.”
Leverkusen will face Atalanta in the Europa League final on May 31. It will be Alonso’s first major final as a manager.
Alonso is a former Spain international who played for Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich during his playing career. He retired from playing in 2017 and began his managerial career with Real Madrid’s youth team. He was appointed Leverkusen manager in October 2022.
Leverkusen have struggled for consistency this season, but they have shown signs of improvement under Alonso. They have won their last two Bundesliga games and are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions.
Atalanta are a dangerous team who are known for their attacking style of play. They are currently sixth in Serie A and have reached the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia.
The Europa League final will be a tough test for Leverkusen, but they will be confident of causing an upset if they can play to their potential.
