A 13-year-old student from Carefield School Complex in Bawjiase, near Kasoa, Central Region, has become a local hero after saving approximately fifty students from a potential bus accident. Augustine Nii Odoi Laryea, a class 6 student, acted quickly by applying the brakes of their school bus, ensuring the safety of himself and his fellow passengers.

The heroic incident occurred last month as the students were heading home. Augustine recounted the story on Onua TV’s Maakye show on Friday, August 11, 2023. He explained that their bus driver, who has since passed away, was driving recklessly, a behaviour unlike him. As they approached the Opembo bridge on their way from Kasoa to Bawjiase, the driver was attempting to navigate around an oncoming wooden cargo vehicle due to ongoing construction on the bridge.

Augustine recognized the danger at that moment. Their bus was veering towards a pit under the bridge, and he noticed a change in the driver’s condition, including a foamy substance coming from his mouth. Without hesitation, Augustine pressed the brake, causing screams and shouts from his fellow students. Despite facing insults from some people in the chaos, he remained focused.

The school’s caterer and another teacher acted swiftly to secure the bus and evacuate the students. Augustine urgently called for his classmates to disembark amidst the tumultuous scene, ensuring everyone’s safety.

Unfortunately, the driver was taken to Bawjiase Hospital but was pronounced dead after being transferred to Buduburam.

Augustine’s courage did not go unnoticed by the school community. A teacher guided him through various classes, instructing students to address him as a “hero” going forward, as per the school’s headmistress’s directive.

Augustine’s mother, Emelia Assah Laryea, revealed that another bus driver recognized his interest and knowledge in cars and driving. Intrigued, the driver engaged Augustine in conversations about vehicles and even took him to the bus, recognizing his potential in these areas.

As the school prepares for an upcoming graduation, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has decided to honour Augustine for his exceptional bravery during the celebration.
