Wassa Amenfi West Old Students Association (WAWOSA), a vibrant youth association in the Amenfi West Municipality has intensified its campaign against drug abuse. This follows after leaders of the association called their members for a meeting, requesting prompt action to be taken before they lose the current youth and possibly the next generation in Amenfi West to drug abuse and drug addiction.

Recently, Ebenezer Ansah-Boafo (Pizzaro), a concerned citizen and native of Asankrangwa made an interesting revelation on drug abuse in Asankrangwa, which was published on Ghanaweb, Pazionmedia and modern Ghana websites. In his article “Drug Abuse in Asankrangwa: a Menace that Demands Attention”, he disclosed how the youth have succumbed to drugs.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was that a young man called Papa Arhin lost his dream wife to drugs.

The community is losing its youth to drugs because it is easy to access now. Drugs are mixed with toffees, bitters, ice cream, etc which makes it more difficult to identify those using and abusing it.

A concerted effort involving the municipal assembly, police service, the media, students, parents, religious leaders and all stakeholders is needed to curb this cankerworm.

WAWOSA has started its campaign against drugs by getting students from various tertiary institutions who represent the association on various campuses to embark on educational talks.

The Education Committee is working in tandem with WAWOSA representatives of the various schools and health committee to sensitise and conscientize the youth on drug abuse and its accompanying addiction.

Some members of the Education Committee, Health Committee and WAWOSA Tertiary Representatives started the campaign on 5th May 2023 by going to Royal FM to share experiences and give pragmatic steps taken by WAWOSA to nip the problem in the bud.

Some schools in the town have also been selected for the campaign exercise from 8 to 9 May 2023. Today, 8th May 2023, the team were at Asectech Basic School to enlighten the students about the dangers associated with drugs. Interestingly, the headmaster of the school said last year in the evening around 10 pm when students were preparing for the BECE, some students were in the bush smoking. However, he is happy that the current JHS one and two students are disciplined and not hooked to drugs. He showed appreciation to students and thanked WAWOSA Executives for such positive action.

WAWOSA has put a lot of measures in place to stamp out the drug menace. A street walk using placards is in the pipeline. This will be done in collaboration with the Asankrangwa Nursing Training Students. Visiting houses and ghettos to engage drug addicts and instil hope in them is also one of the strategies WAWOSA has put in place to deal with the canker.
