Today, August 7, 2023, marks the beginning of the weeklong Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for 600,714 students. Among these students are 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 schools across the country.
This year’s candidates will be the last group to write the BECE, as a new curriculum introduced in 2019 will bring forth a new examination for Junior High School learners starting in 2024. Hence, the year 2024 will see the introduction of a new BECE and a new era in the assessment of students.
However, the Coalition of Concerned Teachers is demanding clarity on the upcoming Standard-based curriculum examination. Adokwei Ayikwie Awule, the Director of Communications for the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, emphasized the need for a clear path regarding the Standard-based curriculum examination. In a statement dated August 3, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) urged the 2023 BECE candidates to avoid engaging in misconduct or any actions that may hinder their goals and aspirations.
