POSTERITY VERDICT: AN OPEN LETTER TO HON.ERIC AFFUL, AMENFI WEST MP ELECT

Spread the love

Hon. Eric Afful,

It is with a complex mix of hope and concern that I address you following your recent electoral victory. Your fourth term as Member of Parliament for Amenfi West after winning a by-election in 2015 represents a significant opportunity, one that demands a profound shift in approach to effectively serve your constituents.

Your past campaigns have lacked a clear vision for Amenfi West. The reliance on a small group of party sympathizers to conduct what has been termed “dirty work (propaganda) at the last hour” has proved successful, exploiting a lack of political awareness among some constituents, considering the constituency’s relatively high illiteracy rate. While your electoral success is undeniable, it has been achieved with minimal effort, relying heavily on the inherent loyalty many constituents hold towards the NDC party. This dependence on party affiliation alone overshadows the critical need for tangible improvements to their lives.

I understand that you are a respected gentleman with commendable ideas. However, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential for misguided counsel from those around you, individuals who may prioritize electoral victories over substantive progress. While some may offer praise driven by self-interest, the enduring legacy you should strive for is a positive impact on the lives of your people, marked by significant developmental advancements in Amenfi West.

For years, the shortcomings in Amenfi West have been excused by the absence of your party from power. That excuse no longer holds. With the NDC poised to form the next government, you have at your disposal the resources and influence to address the persistent challenges facing your constituency. The dilapidated roads, the scarcity of potable water in numerous communities, the unreliable communication networks, and the persistent lack of electricity in some areas, cannot be ignored. The notion that an MP’s role is solely confined to law-making is obsolete. The recent election demonstrates that simply contributing to legislation alone is not sufficient for securing re-election. It is the demonstrable improvement of the lives of your constituents that holds true weight. Now is the time to build stronger connections with the people you serve, rather than disappearing from view and only resurfacing when elections roll around.

The people of Amenfi West expect substantial investment in their well-being. The promises made by President-elect John Mahama during his visit prior to the December 7th, 2024 election must not be forgotten. It is imperative that you build a strong network with the incoming administration to ensure the fulfilment of these promises. This is not merely a matter of fulfilling electoral commitments; it is a matter of upholding the trust placed in you.

“Sometimes, fate grants you another chance, not necessarily because you were right, but rather to prompt introspection, personal growth, and a renewed commitment to positively impacting the lives of those you serve, especially your constituents.”

The coming years will be a critical test of your leadership. The legacy you leave will be determined not by the number of terms served, but by the tangible improvements you bring to the lives of the people of Amenfi West. Failure to address the issues raised will undoubtedly result in what I have termed “Posterity Verdict,” a judgment passed down not by me, but by future generations.

Congratulations once again on your election victory in 2024. I urge you to seize this momentous opportunity to transform Amenfi West into a thriving and prosperous community.

Sincerely,

A Concerned Citizen of Amenfi West
