The Ministry of Railway Development, in collaboration with its agencies, the Ghana Railway Development Authority and the Ghana Railway Company Ltd, along with officials and engineers from Pesa Bydgoszcz, the Polish manufacturer of the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) 001, regrets to inform the general public of an incident that occurred today, 18th April 2024 during the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) of the new DMU on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.
At approximately 12:00 PM on Thursday, April 17, 2024, while conducting the test, an unfortunate incident transpired around KM 76 + 100 of the railway line. The DMU, as it approached the curve at km 76 + 100, encountered a stationary vehicle positioned directly across the rail track. Despite the immediate application of the emergency braking system, the train was unable to come to a complete stop before colliding with the obstructing vehicle.
It is crucial to note that the vehicle in question was unmanned, and the location where it was found is not designated as an authorized level crossing. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries sustained by passengers on the train or bystanders in the vicinity. However, there was minor damage to the driver’s cab section of the train as a result of the collision.
Following the incident, swift action was taken, and the matter was promptly reported to the police. Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the presence of the stationary vehicle on the railway track and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The DMU involved in the incident has been relocated to the workshop for thorough assessment and any necessary repairs. The Ministry, along with its partner agencies and stakeholders, reassures the public that safety remains our utmost priority. We are fully committed to ensuring the continued safe operation of our railway systems across the country.
The ministry urges all stakeholders, including motorists, pedestrians, and residents living near railway tracks, to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to safety protocols when crossing railway tracks or accessing railway infrastructure. By working together and prioritizing safety at all times, we can mitigate risks and ensure the well-being of all individuals involved in railway operations and transportation activities.
The Ministry of Railway Development extended its appreciation to the public for their understanding and cooperation during this period. Updates on the investigation and any subsequent actions will be communicated in due course.
