Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concerns over recent statements and actions by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing them as “a matter of serious consternation for political watchers.”

In a Facebook post, Mahama specifically criticized Akufo-Addo’s insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him and his statement that he cannot be succeeded by someone he has defeated in previous elections. Mahama characterized these remarks as “arrogant” and “anti-democratic,” undermining the principle of peaceful transition of power.

Mahama also raised concerns about the potential for electoral manipulation, citing the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence and the killing of eight innocent citizens during the 2020 election. He warned that Akufo-Addo “would not hesitate to trample on Ghana’s constitution to manipulate the process in favor of his preferred successor.”

Mahama emphasized that the will of the people and the Almighty God will determine who succeeds Akufo-Addo, reaffirming the power of the people in shaping Ghana’s future. He urged Akufo-Addo to leave a legacy of a peaceful, transparent, and credible election, as advised by Mahama during a recent meeting in Damongo.

Mahama’s concerns highlight the importance of maintaining democratic principles and ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process in Ghana. His message serves as a reminder that the peaceful transfer of power is essential for the stability and progress of the nation.
