Hon. Ignatius Kwasi Afrifa, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Amenfi West in the upcoming 2024 general elections, has expressed deep concern over the lack of development in the municipality, despite its status as Ghana’s largest cocoa producer. In a recent interview on the Pae Mu Ka Show, Afrifa called for greater attention to be paid to Amenfi West’s plight, highlighting the need to “amplify the situation” to ensure the district receives the necessary resources and investment.
Afrifa pointed to the glaring disparity between the district’s economic contribution to Ghana through cocoa production and the lack of benefits it has received in return. He emphasized that despite being the leading cocoa producer, Amenfi West has been deprived of basic infrastructure, including dedicated cocoa roads, clinics for cocoa workers, and scholarships for cocoa-related education. He specifically argued that if COCOBOD is investing in clinics for its workers, then Amenfi West, as the primary source of cocoa, should be a top priority.
The candidate expressed worry over the lack of representation and development in the district, citing the fact that Amenfi West has consistently voted for the NDC for over 30 years, with the NPP winning only a brief period of representation. He believes that this long-standing support has not translated into adequate infrastructure or development for the district.
Afrifa further emphasized the need for greater media attention to Amenfi West’s plight. He expressed disappointment over the absence of coverage in social media and newspapers, arguing that this silence contributes to the district’s marginalization and neglect.
Demonstrating his commitment to addressing the situation, Afrifa shared that he has taken proactive steps to bring the issue to the attention of government officials. He has personally shared pictures and videos of dilapidated bridges and roads in Ankasagya with Hon. Asenso, and has also sent detailed information about the Danielkrom bridge to both the Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ministry of Transport.
Afrifa’s call for “amplifying” Amenfi West’s situation is a plea for greater accountability and transparency in development efforts. His concerns highlight the need for a more equitable distribution of resources and a focus on addressing the needs of historically under-served areas like Amenfi West. His appeal for broader media attention and government action is a call for a more just and equitable development paradigm.
