Wisdom Kwadwo Mprah, a senior lecturer at KNUST’s Centre for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, has made history by becoming West Africa’s first deaf professor. His remarkable journey is a testament to his determination and perseverance.
Prof. Mprah’s academic path began under humble circumstances, attending primary school under trees in the Oti Region. He later attended Krachi Secondary School and Okuapemman Secondary School, before pursuing his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Cape Coast.
However, during his Master’s studies, Prof. Mprah faced a life-altering challenge when he became deaf. Undeterred, he learned sign language at the Mampong School for the Deaf, enabling him to navigate the workforce and academia with greater ease.
A scholarship to study in the United States marked a significant turning point in Prof. Mprah’s academic journey. He earned a PhD in Disability Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago, cementing his position as a leading expert in his field.
Prof. Mprah’s achievement serves as a powerful reminder that disability is not a barrier to success. His story inspires hope and motivates others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face.
