Hon. Agnes Sonful, Former Amenfi West MP, Passes Away

Ghanaian politics has lost a respected figure with the passing of Hon. Agnes Sonful, former Member of Parliament for Amenfi West from 2003 to 2004. Hon. Sonful passed away on the morning of Sunday, April 28th, 2024, at the Asankrangwa Catholic Hospital.

According to reports, Hon. Sonful was preparing to take a bath when she suddenly fainted. She was rushed to the Asankrangwa Catholic Hospital, but unfortunately, efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Hon. Agnes Sonful is widely recognized as one of the most effective Members of Parliament in the history of Amenfi West and Ghana as a whole. During her brief tenure of one and a half years, she made significant contributions to the development of the constituency.

Hon. Sonful’s legacy includes the construction of numerous infrastructure projects, including:

• 3-unit classroom block, Breman
• 6-unit classroom block, Fordjourkrom
• Several other classroom blocks and educational facilities

These projects have had a lasting impact on the lives of students and communities in Amenfi West, improving access to quality education.

Hon. Agnes Sonful entered Parliament in 2003 after winning a by-election following the resignation of the incumbent MP, Hon. Kofi Asante, of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament after beating her family member Gerald Danquah who represented the NDC. Hon Agnes Sonful won the election by 63.9%.

Hon. Sonful’s passing has been met with sadness and tributes from across the political spectrum. Colleagues, constituents, and community members have expressed their condolences and acknowledged her contributions to the development of Amenfi West.

The passing of Hon. Agnes Sonful is a great loss to the people of Amenfi West and Ghana as a whole. Her legacy as a dedicated and effective legislator will continue to inspire future generations.
