GES implements project to promote STEM in Junior High Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) with funding support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is implementing a four-year gender-responsive pedagogy project that generally seeks to improve the competency of Junior High School (JHS) girls in Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) Education in two regions, Central and Eastern, across 10 districts, 5 districts in each of the two regions.

A total of 400 Junior High Schools, 200 from each participating region, are beneficiaries of this ongoing project.

Some of the activities being implemented under the project include:
• Development and printing of Math and Science Handbook and Gender Responsive Manuals for Teachers.
• Training Mathematics and Science teachers in gender-responsive pedagogy.
• Organizing Mathematics and Science Quiz Competitions at School/Circuit, District, Regional and National Levels.
• Organizing Girls’ Vacation Camp Meetings.
• Advocacy on girls’ rights issues at all levels.
• After school classes.
• School club activities.

On Wednesday 5th April 2023, a project steering committee meeting chaired by the Director-General, Dr Eric Nkansah and KOICA Ghana Country Director, Moon Heon Kong, was held to assess implementation of the project activities and to consider and approve project implementation plan for first and second quarter of 2023.

Also in attendance was the Director in charge of Schools and Instructions, Director in charge of Partnerships and Affiliations, Director of Science Education, Director in charge of Girls’Education, Director in charge of Guidance and Counselling, the Eastern and Central Regional Directors and five District Directors.

GES is committed to promoting the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) right from the Primary Schools to the Junior High Schools and Senior High School levels.
