Former Amenfi West DCE, Hon. Samuel Alberto Tekyi Warns Ghana on Dangerous Precipice of Injustice and Polarisation
Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wassa Amenfi West, Hon. Alberto Tekyi has voiced serious concerns about the state of justice and governance in Ghana, arguing that the nation’s motto, “Freedom and Justice,” has become increasingly ironic.
According to Hon. Tekyi, Ghana is now operating with “two justice systems”: one that favours those in positions of power and another that applies to ordinary citizens. He made this opinion after much thought and seeing it come through for many years, even under different leadership.
He argues that the nation is slowly paving a dangerous path, while the elite turn a blind eye with corruption. He emphasizes that the lack of concern is a dangerous sign when we cannot rely on the justice system.
“If a nation becomes so polarised and unwarranted retribution becomes glare and the people keep SILENT while beneficiaries bask in its glory, Ghana may be gradually excavating a path to a dangerous precipice.
The chains of captivity are now held by our own: those in authority and those with absolute power, who detain and restrict freedoms with disdain while exempting their own, “he said.
Drawing on his own experiences witnessing the Nkrumah regime, the National Liberation Council (NLC), and the Busia era, Hon. Tekyi expresses disappointment that the current generation of leaders and “political hardliners” have not learned from history. Instead, he suggests there has been a decline in “comradeship and brotherliness.”
Leaders are just looking at helping themselves.
Hon. Tekyi ended by questioning whether the current state of affairs reflects the “FREEDOM we danced to and the JUSTICE we hoped for,” suggesting a significant disconnect between the ideals of Ghana’s founders and the present reality.
Is this the FREEDOM we danced to and the JUSTICE we hoped for?
