Fake Police Station Busted in Kenya: Man Runs Unauthorized Precinct for Six Months

A Kenyan man, identified as Collins Letting, has been arrested after authorities discovered he had been operating an illegal police station in Uasin Gishu County for a startling six-month period. The unauthorized facility, complete with detention cells and an office, had been painted in official police colors and was used to patrol the area, primarily targeting individuals involved in the illegal timber trade from Cengalo Forest.

The discovery, made on March 8th, sent shockwaves through the community, as even the local area chief was unaware that the station was not legitimate. The unusual operation was reported to the Kamuyu Police Post, prompting an immediate investigation.

“We were surprised to find a fully set-up facility painted in police colours, yet no authorisation had been granted for such an establishment in this area,” the police report stated, highlighting the scale and brazenness of the operation.

The National Police Service Act 2014 clearly stipulates that only the Inspector-General of Police holds the authority to establish police stations and patrol bases within Kenya, making Letting’s independent operation a clear violation of the law.

Initial investigations suggest that Letting, described as a trader and political activist with a prior history of legal issues, leveraged his alleged close relationship with a former Member of Parliament to convince locals of the station’s legitimacy. This perceived connection facilitated the smooth operation of the illegal facility for an extended period.

Residents have expressed significant concerns regarding their security and the potential implications of such a deceptive operation. The incident raises serious questions about oversight and the potential for abuse of power within the community.

Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi has confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to determine Letting’s motives and the full extent of his activities. “A team of security officers from the area are expected to visit the location of the said fake police station to get more information about the same,” said Mr. Mwanthi. “Right now I have no information about the said fake police station.” He has assured residents that appropriate action will be taken to ensure their safety and maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has strongly condemned the operation of the illegal police post. Speaking in Mombasa at the opening of a legitimate, newly built police station, Kanja emphasized that due process had not been followed in establishing the unauthorized station. He added that authorities are investigating the matter to determine the appropriate course of action. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and adherence to legal procedures in the establishment and operation of law enforcement facilities.
