Drones Deployed in Bawku to Combat Ongoing Violence

The ongoing conflict in Bawku, Ghana, has reached a critical juncture, prompting the deployment of drones by security agencies in a determined effort to apprehend perpetrators and curb the escalating violence. This innovative approach utilizes technology to enhance surveillance and improve response times in a region plagued by frequent attacks.

The strategy involves deploying drones equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of monitoring large areas at high altitudes. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide a crucial bird’s-eye view, allowing security forces to identify and track gunmen engaged in hostile activities. Once potential perpetrators are located, ground forces are deployed to apprehend them, recovering weapons in the process. Reports indicate that this tactical deployment has already resulted in several arrests and the seizure of firearms.

The escalating violence necessitated this technological upgrade to security measures. The recent deployment of drones follows a disturbing pattern of killings by unidentified gunmen. The early morning hours of December 17th witnessed another outbreak of intense gunfire, with heavy exchanges reported in the Bawku-Gingande and Kpalore areas. While, thankfully, no casualties have yet been confirmed from this latest clash, the consistent threat of violence remains a significant concern.

The deployment of the drones is a direct response to the rising death toll linked to the renewed conflict. The period since late October 2024 has been particularly volatile, resulting in a total of 35 fatalities to date. Two separate incidents on December 16th tragically highlight the indiscriminate nature of the violence. Moro Aziz, a mentally ill man from Gozesi, was killed while wandering near the Bawku cemetery, while Kasim lost his life in Daduri while attempting to relocate. These incidents showcase the vulnerability of civilians caught in the crossfire.

The strategic use of drones represents a significant escalation in the fight against the persistent violence in Bawku. While the use of this technology is intended to improve the efficacy of security operations and aid in apprehending perpetrators, the underlying causes of the conflict require long-term, comprehensive solutions. The drone deployment signifies a shift in tactics but the ultimate objective must be to address the root causes of the violence and establish lasting peace in the region.
