In March 2025, PAZION MEDIA, supported by the Chris Foundation Ghana, initiated a reading project in select schools across Amenfi West, including Saint Benedict, Mt. Calvary, Presby, and IBS. All learners who took part received some learning resources. While the project witnessed a commendable number of students demonstrating reading abilities, the PAZION MEDIA team identified recurring challenges that hindered overall reading proficiency. These observations and subsequent recommendations, stemming from the project’s first phase in the Amenfi West Municipality, aim to address these shortcomings and further elevate reading standards.
The assessment revealed a consistent pattern of reading pitfalls among students. These included phonetic confusion, where students struggled to differentiate between similar-sounding sounds; vocabulary gaps, indicating a lack of understanding of certain words; mispronunciation, reflecting incorrect articulation of words; syllable stress errors, highlighting difficulty in placing emphasis on the correct syllables; word identification errors, showing an inability to recognize certain words; and disfluency, characterized by hesitations and stumbling over words during reading. Furthermore, the team observed a pervasive lack of confidence among many students when reading.
Based on these observations, PAZION MEDIA, in collaboration with KinKan Consultancy in Accra, recommends implementing targeted reading programs specifically designed for lower and upper primary and Junior High School students during vacation periods or weekends. These programs are intended to address the identified deficiencies and foster greater reading confidence among students in Amenfi West. School heads or teachers are urged to proactively identify students within their institutions who struggle with reading and encourage their enrollment in these vacation programs. Interested schools can contact PAZION MEDIA at 0546163213 to facilitate student participation and further enhance reading proficiency within the Amenfi West region. This strategic partnership seeks to cultivate a stronger reading culture and equip students with the necessary skills to excel academically.
