Amenfi West at a Crossroads: Is Development Being Gambled Away?

A growing sense of disillusionment is sweeping through the Amenfi West Municipality as constituents question the leadership of their incumbent MP, Hon. Eric Afful. After nine years in Parliament, many feel he has little to show for his tenure, leaving the community with a sense of unmet needs and a yearning for genuine development.

The concerns center around Hon. Afful’s perceived lack of action and his reliance on excuses. Critics point to his frequent appearances at funerals, where he offers small donations and sometimes even provides coffins for bereaved party members, as a testament to his lack of tangible contributions to the community. His frequent use of the excuse “my government is not in power” to evade responsibility further fuels dissatisfaction.

A key point of contention is Hon. Afful’s alliance with Kofi Asante, a figure who has shifted allegiances between the NDC and NPP, returning to the NDC after previously defecting. This partnership has raised serious concerns among Amenfi West residents, who view it as a betrayal of trust and a gamble with their development.

The apprehension stems from Kofi Asante’s past actions. He defected from the NDC in 2003, potentially jeopardizing his political standing. Now, his endorsement of Hon. Afful, after previously labeling him as “incompetent” during the 2020 elections, has eroded his credibility. Many citizens perceive this move as a self-serving act, driven by personal gains rather than a genuine commitment to the community’s well-being.

Adding to the frustration, chiefs in Amenfi West have openly criticized Hon. Afful, stating their disappointment with his performance. They vow to resist the traditional practice of accepting small sums of money (“envelopes”) in exchange for their votes, demanding real development that benefits the entire community.

The looming election presents a crucial turning point for Amenfi West. Will the citizens accept the status quo and continue to be let down by their leaders? Or will they demand change, seeking a leader who prioritizes development, accountability, and genuine service to the community? The choice lies with the people of Amenfi West, who must decide whether to accept the gamble offered by Hon. Afful and Kofi Asante or embrace a new path towards a brighter future.
