Ghana GoldBod Taskforce Busts 10 Chinese Nationals in Asankrangwa Suspected of Smuggling Gold

A decisive operation by the Ghana GoldBod Taskforce in Asankragwa, Western Region, has led to the arrest of ten Chinese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal gold smuggling.
On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, an operation occurred in Asankrangwa, within the Cuba Suburb area, prompting Pazion Media to be notified about an alleged robbery. However, subsequent investigation revealed that the incident was actually a taskforce operation. Recent media engagemet with GOLDBOD CEO, Sammy Gyamfi has confirmed the taskforce operation.

The Taskforce’s efforts resulted in the seizure of a significant cache of illicit materials, including 1.3 kilograms of gold worth an estimated 1.4 million cedis, 1.3 million cedis in cash, and a collection of casino cards. This discovery has raised concerns about potential links to organized crime and money laundering, suggesting that the scope of illegal activities within Ghana’s gold industry may be far-reaching.

Speaking to the media after the operation, GoldBod Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sammy Gyamfi (Esq.) underscored the agency’s unwavering dedication to enforcing the GoldBod Act 1140. This crucial legislation explicitly prohibits foreigners from participating in local gold trading, a measure designed to protect the livelihoods of Ghanaian miners and fortify the national economy. The CEO stressed the importance of upholding the law to safeguard Ghana’s resources from exploitation by foreign entities.

“Today’s operation marks a significant stride in our ongoing battle against illegal gold trading,” Gyamfi stated emphatically. “We will not tolerate any individual or group that attempts to circumvent our laws and exploit our precious resources. The GoldBod Taskforce remains steadfast in its mission to protect Ghana’s gold from illegal exploitation, and we are committed to holding accountable anyone who disregards our established regulations.”

This assertive action by the GoldBod Taskforce signifies a notable shift in Ghana’s approach to combating illegal gold trading, an issue that has long posed a threat to the nation’s economic stability and the well-being of countless local miners and businesses. The arrest of the Chinese nationals serves as a clear warning to those engaged in illicit activities, indicating that the era of unchecked smuggling is drawing to a close. This operation demonstrates a renewed commitment to transparency and accountability in Ghana’s gold sector and is expected to have a deterrent effect on future illegal activities.
