The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, has announced the successful completion of a joint operation targeting illegal mining activities along the Ankobra River. The operation, conducted under the banner of the “Blue Water Initiative,” involved a combined task force comprised of personnel from the Western Naval Command and the 2nd Infantry Battalion.
According to Hon. Nelson, he personally directed the operation in line with the goals of the Blue Water Initiative, a national effort to combat water pollution and protect vital water resources. The task force was led by Brigadier General Musah Whajah (Rtd.).
The operation yielded significant results, with the task force dismantling and destroying over 75 “changfang” machines – specialized equipment used in illegal alluvial mining. In addition, the operation resulted in the recovery of two excavators used in the illicit activity. The excavators are currently being held as evidence, and further investigations are underway.
Hon. Nelson stated that the operation represents a significant step in the effort to restore the health of the Ankobra River and combat the environmental damage caused by illegal mining. He emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and protecting the region’s natural resources for future generations.
The Minister further noted that the Blue Water Initiative will continue to conduct similar operations to address illegal mining and other environmental threats throughout the Western Region. He also called on community members to cooperate with authorities in identifying and reporting illegal activities that threaten the region’s water resources.
