Asankrangwa’s Soul in Crises: Philip Toku, Asankrangwa Native in US Calls for Immediate Installation of a Chief

Philip Ayaaba Toku, an Asankrangwa native now residing in the United States, has issued a passionate plea for the immediate enstoolment of a new chief for the town. In a heartfelt statement, Toku argues that Asankrangwa, a once vibrant hub and the capital district of Amenfi West, has been experiencing a decline in its socio-economic and cultural well-being since the passing of its revered chief, Nana Anyani Buadum.

Toku laments the slowed pace of development and the town’s descent into a centre for drug abuse and illegal mining activities, contrasting it with Asankrangwa’s previous status as a beacon of growth in the Western Region. He expresses deep concern over the youth, who are increasingly entangled in substance abuse and lawlessness, and the careless sale of ancestral lands by a select few without proper oversight. Toku further notes a decline in respect for elders and a shift in political leadership towards a pursuit of power rather than a commitment to service.

Toku believes that Asankrangwa is lost without a chief, emphasizing that “a chief is not just a ruler, he is the soul of the people.” He contends that the prolonged vacancy of the stool has weakened the town’s spirit, leading to disunity, loss of direction, and a decline in overall well-being.

Though Toku does not belong to either of the royal gates, he is speaking as a concerned citizen to stop Asankrangwa’s decay and reclaim its dignity, culture, and future, he believes Asankrangwa needs a Chief to unite, protect, and inspire.

Toku calls upon all members of the Asankrangwa community, including the royal families, to take responsibility and actively work towards the restoration of traditional leadership. He urges them to not let politics, division, or silence rob Asankrangwa of its heritage, warning that “when chieftaincy dies, the people lose their identity.” Toku concludes by reiterating the urgent need for a chief, emphasizing that the time for action is now.
