Germany Considers Labour Mobility Agreement with Ghana, Potentially Opening Doors for Thousands of Youth-Okudzeto Ablakwa

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that Germany is receptive to the prospect of establishing a labor mobility agreement with Ghana. This potential agreement could pave the way for thousands of young Ghanaian citizens to secure employment opportunities within Germany, facilitated by a special bilateral arrangement.

Currently under discussion, this agreement aims to guarantee safe, rewarding, and dignified employment conditions for Ghanaian workers, mirroring the framework established in a similar agreement recently signed between Germany and Kenya. Minister Ablakwa expressed optimism regarding the swift implementation of this agreement.

The announcement follows productive meetings held between Minister Ablakwa, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Mr. Joachim Stamp—the Special Representative of the Federal Government for Migration Agreements, and senior officials from the German Interior Ministry. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the ongoing UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin.

Minister Ablakwa emphasized that the government of President Mahama firmly believes in pursuing meaningful and impactful diplomacy that directly addresses the most pressing challenges confronting the Ghanaian people. This labour mobility agreement reflects this commitment by seeking to create tangible economic opportunities for Ghanaian youth and enhance bilateral relations between Ghana and Germany.
