Ghanaian Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that all pupils in basic schools across the country will begin receiving Ghana Card identity numbers starting June 17, 2023.
The initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the government, the Ghana Health Service, the Births and Deaths Registry, the Ghana Statistical Service, and the National Identification Authority. By integrating these systems, the government aims to provide every child from 0 to 13 years of age with a unique identity number.
This number will be linked to the identities of their parents, ensuring their place within the national identity system. According to Dr. Bawumia, the Ghana Card is not merely an identification document but a “promise to our children of a future, where their identity and rights are recognised from their very first birth.”
The Vice President emphasized the government’s commitment to building an efficient and responsive public sector that meets the needs of Ghanaian citizens. He believes that providing Ghana Card numbers to all pupils will contribute to this goal.
Following the announcement, Dr. Bawumia visited the Dambai Saturday market, where he was warmly welcomed by market women, traders, and residents. The campaign tour has been marked by enthusiastic support from Ghanaians, who have expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and the NPP’s ability to lead the country toward greater success.
